Description
The Ionian Greeks occupied the westernmost coast of Asia Minor, facing out into the Aegean Sea, with the rest of the Anatolian plateau to the east. When the king of Lydia, Croesus, was defeated by the Achaemenid Empire in 547BC, Ionian lands were left vulnerable. Subjugated by the Persians, they retained a deal of theoretical independence, but found themselves at the whim of local tyrants. In 499BC, at the behest of one of these tyrants, the Ionians initiated a revolt which was the ultimate catalyst for the first Greco-Persian war. Their position - so close to both Persia and the Greek states of the Peloponnese - meant that Ionian cities were often caught in the ongoing conflict between them.
